The Society for Marine Mammalogy (SMM) is the world’s largest nonprofit professional organization dedicated to the advancement of marine mammal science. With more than 1,700 members across 50+ countries, SMM unites researchers, conservationists, educators, and policymakers in a shared mission: to promote the global understanding and conservation of marine mammals. The rebrand was designed to reflect both the society’s scientific authority and its role as a unifying voice for a global community — positioning SMM as the trusted hub where knowledge, collaboration, and advocacy converge.

Strategy that connects science and society


The strategy centered on amplifying SMM’s dual role: advancing marine mammal science through peer-reviewed research while inspiring conservation action across borders. We positioned the society not simply as an academic body, but as a global movement where science informs policy and public awareness. Key pillars: scientific excellence, conservation advocacy, and global collaboration. Messaging needed to honor the rigor of marine mammal research while also engaging wider audiences who support and benefit from its work.

Identity designed for clarity and purpose
Logo identity and visual identity drew inspiration from the ocean’s forms and rhythms — streamlined shapes reminiscent of whales, dolphins, and currents. A palette of deep blues and gradients suggested both scientific integrity and the vastness of the seas. Verbal identity leaned into clarity and confidence: “Advancing marine mammal science worldwide,” “Science for conservation,” “Connecting oceans, connecting people.” Every design decision reinforced credibility, while creating a brand system that felt inclusive and inspiring to members across cultures.

A digital hub for knowledge and collaboration
The website and digital experience became the society’s anchor: a platform for members to access research, share knowledge, and connect with peers, while also serving as a public-facing resource for education and conservation awareness. UI/UX design emphasized clarity and accessibility, with seamless integration to Marine Mammal Science, SMM’s flagship journal. Video storytelling and social media campaigns spotlighted research breakthroughs, conservation successes, and conference highlights, extending the society’s influence far beyond academia.

Exhibitions, conferences, and collateral that inspire action
Biennial conferences — the largest gatherings of marine mammal researchers in the world — were reimagined with cohesive branding, signage, and digital content that created a consistent and inspiring experience. Educational materials, donor reports, and policy briefs carried the brand into classrooms, government halls, and conservation projects. Branded merchandise, from field kits to apparel, strengthened community identity and gave members tangible ways to carry the mission into their work. Every touchpoint reinforced SMM’s role as both a professional society and a global movement.

Outcomes: where science meets global impact
With the rebrand, SMM strengthened its visibility as the international authority on marine mammal science. Membership engagement rose as conferences, workshops, and online resources became more cohesive and accessible. Digital platforms drove greater reach for the journal and conservation content, while social media engagement grew steadily as campaigns gained traction across research and advocacy networks. Press coverage and policy recognition positioned SMM as a trusted voice on marine mammal issues, and donor confidence increased with clearer, more impactful communications. What began as a professional society now resonates as a global force advancing marine science and protecting the species that depend on it.
